InStep Beginners Runners Initiative (BRI) - Coordination
InStep Devon is pleased to have been chosen as the local coordinating body for the Run England programme for Exeter, Mid Devon and East Devon, offered though the County Sports Partnership, Active Devon.
Beginner Runners / Joggers
There are lots of local groups for anyone who does a bit of jogging - or who would like to start. We're part of a national programme led by Run England, designed to get more people active in the sport.
We know that lots of people are wary of joining the big running clubs - though many of those clubs genuinely do welcome joggers - so these new groups are designed for people just like you. They all have qualified leaders to make sure that they offer sensible routes at a sensible pace.
We recommend that anyone who has concerns about their health should first consult their doctor before starting - but other than that, just come along to one of our groups and give it a try.
It's not expensive - most charge between £1 to £2 a session, and some offer "first time for free" deals.
There's an extensive list of local groups and more information about this programme on the Beginners page of this website; or you can search the Run England website www.runengland.org/groups to see details of groups near you.
Leading Beginner Runner Groups
If you already lead a group of beginner runners in Exeter, East Devon or Mid Devon - or if you are thinking about setting one up - the Run England initiative www.runengland.org/groups offers a good route to establishing your credibility. And to add an incentive, there's some (modest) funding plus a range of networking and promotional support available through the Beginner Runner Initiative led locally by InStep.
We're keen to get a strong network of Run England groups covering all parts of the area. There are lots of groups already up and running - but some obvious gaps too. If you're thinking of establishing a group that's "a bit different", or to cover a town or village which doesn't have anything at the moment we'd be pleased to hear from you. That might include local sports clubs who could offer running as a cross-training opportunity.
If you want to know more about training as a LiRF, please get in touch with us at BRI@swrr.co.uk
Once your group is set up and confirmed, you can proceed as follows.
IF YOUR GROUP IS ALREADY REGISTERED WITH RUN ENGLAND, we'd be pleased for you to become part of the local InStep Devon network. Please send an email to BRI@swrr.co.uk with your name and contact details and we will be in touch.
Local BRI Targets
Our target is to recruit 310 "qualifying runners" over a period of approximately one year ending September 2014.
A "qualifying runner" must complete a Run England form confirming that they are not already a regular runner.
We also have a small budget for training new LiRFs (Leaders in Running Fitness). In approved cases, we can offer an Active Devon bursary covering 50% of the cost of a LiRF course.
